Yep, This Is Where I Live

So that's the sunset view from the beach bar that's just across the road from my shop. Yeah, I know, it's a dirty job...

I'm getting settled into island life and all that fun stuff. It's been good to catch up with friends I have down here and I've met some great people as well since I arrived. It's the beginning of the slow season here so there's not too much action on the island but there's enough for us to be getting in two dives a day and we have some large groups that will be diving at the shop in the next few weeks so I'm keeping busy.

Friday is my official start of my rescue diver certification. I was supposed to have started today but there's a guy who emailed about doing his rescue course as well and he was delayed a day in getting to the island so he has to do his first aid course tomorrow and then we'll start together on Friday. Once that's done on Monday, I'll be officially into my divemaster training and busting my ass every day at the shop. There's another divemaster trainee at the shop right now named Ed and I've had the chance to sit in on some of the lectures and training sessions that he's been doing so I have a bit of a head start already. Andrea and Alex are the two instructors/divemasters at at the shop and they're both rockstars who will be great to work with and learn from. I'm hoping to wrap up my divemaster by the middle-end of October so I have some time to actually work at the shop and earn some money while I'm down here.

Tomorrow morning we're diving one of the wrecks (intentional sinking) and Alex is going to be taking out her camera so I should have some pics to post in the next update. If you want to see pics of the island and some underwater shots as well from my previous trips down here, I have quite a few on my Flickr which can be found in my links on the right side of this page. So far the divemasters/instructors have been absolutely stellar. The water's been around 86 degrees and I'm diving in boardshorts. Freaking awesome. The rainy season will be here in about another month or so so I'm going to enjoy the no wetsuit diving while I can.

We've had a few nights out already, but nothing too crazy. Seeing how beers are $2 and cocktails are $3, it can be dangerous to go out down here. Friday is going to be one of those nights though, I'm afraid. One of my friends who used to be an instructor at the shop now owns one of the best bars on the island (it's got a pool...) and is sponsoring a poker pub crawl. The basic idea is teams of 5 have to go to 5 different bars and everyone on the team has to have a drink at each bar. Once everyone has had a drink at the bar, the team gets to draw a card from a deck and move to the next bar. After all the teams have hit all 5 bars, we return to his bar and the team with the best poker hand based on the cards they drew wins a $100 bar tab. Game on.

I think that's about all for now kids. I need to get some sleep so I'm good to go for the wreck dive tomorrow. It's not something you want to go into without a clear head and a good nights sleep being that it's a wreck and it's sits in about 100 ft. of water. Sunday is my day off at the shop so I'll get back on here and let you know how the dive and pub crawl went. I may be moving to some new digs as well on Sunday but I will update at one point, I promise. And if any of you want to come visit, just let me know. Until Sunday.
