Imagine sitting on your toilet, having a nice peaceful moment, and you look over and see this monstrosity. Everything clamped shut so fast I'm sure I heard a sonic boom. Now, I couldn't let this beast just hang out in my room seeing as how I was getting ready for bed and didn't want him creeping around as I slept (because I knew with absolute certainty he was looking at me as a potential meal) so I decided to trap him and let him spread his death and destruction in the garden. Plus I didn't have a flamethrower handy at the moment. So I grab the biggest pitcher I have and my cutting board (he could easily bite through my plastic cups and I didn't want my hand anywhere near this killing machine) and move in to trap him. Little bastard was quick. And I could hear his legs skitter as he moved. Urgh. So after 10 minutes of him avoiding my every attempt to free him (me) and pissing him off, and knowing I wouldn't sleep with him in my room, I decided on a new tactic. The size 10 running shoe tactic. He brushed off the first two attempts but the third was the coup de grace. And I slept like a baby.

This is Ronnie the giant rhinoceros beetle. And yes that is a matchbox behind him. This guy decided to land on my shoulder the other night while it was dark out which definitely gave me a momentary pucker factor of about 6.5. However, once I got the picture, I was kind enough to let him go in the garden so he could terrify another neighbor.
So yeah, the bugs are massive here and there's tons of mosquitoes as well. My lower legs look like I have leprosy or something and I've decided that buying bug spray is going to be my biggest expense while I'm here on the island.
On a diving note, I finished my rescue course. I'm officially a divemaster trainee. Granted I'm dealing with some ear issues at the moment so I haven't been in the water in two days but I'm at least getting a bunch of studying in.
It's getting dark and I only get wireless on my porch and the bug armada is starting to rouse from their slumber so I think I'm going to call it a night.

Man Matt, those are some BIG bugs. Your great though for letting them go. You know me...can't even kill a fly. Have fun and keep posting pics when you can.
